Grevillea robusta

Proteaceae

Silky Oak

Evergreen tree to 30m high by 10m wide. The leaves are 15-20cm long, fern-like and deeply divided with silver undersides. Silky Oaks shed their leaves in late spring prior to the emergence of golden, 10-15cm long, toothbrush-like inflorescences in early summer.

Uses

Ornamental tree suitable for parks and larger gardens. The timber is used for furniture making and it is commonly used as a rootstock for difficult to grow Grevillea species.

Culture

Suitable for full sun in temperate and sub-tropical climates. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils, but will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and unlike most Grevilleas, does not suffer from phosphorous toxicity. Frost tolerant once established. Propagate from seed.
