Deciduous shrub 1-3m high by 1-2m wide. Leaves are mid green and braodly lanceolate, becoming brightly coloured in autumn. Flowers are red, pink, orange or yellow and large with five partly fused petals, borne in mid-spring. This subspecies is the principal parent of the deciduous mollis Azaleas.

Uses

An ornamental shrub suitable for small gardens and pots.

Culture

Prefers part shade and protection from hot sun and strong winds. Requires well-drained, fertile and acidic soil. This plant forms a mass of dense root hairs without spreading roots and consequently must be kept moist to prevent roots drying out. Propagate by cuttings or layering. Prone to sap sucking pests including two-spotted mite.
