Includes a wide variety of sizes and shapes.  Most have showy masses of attractive flowers, of varying colours. Foliage is generally aromatic, leaves not divided 

New Zealand hybrids (mostly L. scoparium hybrids) are less hardy in Australia although the flowers are generally showier. 

Uses

Garden plant, sometimes a border plant or windbreak, sometimes a feature plant or container plant.

Culture

Most are very hardy and fast growing. Most species like moist but well drained soil. 
Some will tolerate dryness and others water logging.

Propagation

Propagate by cuttings or seed (Hybrids propagated by cuttings)

Cultivars

Species include:

L amboiniensis 3 x 2.5m Grey-green leaves and white flowers in summer. Hardy in sub-tropical or tropics.

L. arachnoides 1 x 1.5m White flowers, spring - early summer, hardy, tolerates wet soil and dense shade

L. brachyandrum 4 x 3m Green narrow leaves, grey/pinkish bark, white flowers spring and summer. Suited to poorly drained soil, frost hardy and tolerates heavy shade. 

L. brevipes 4 x 3m Small oblong green leaves, white flowers spring and summer, frost hardy– suitable as a hedge, hardy and fast growing. 

L. continentale   2 x 2m Small lance shapes leaves, white and occasionally pink flowers in spring, summer, good screening plant - tolerates poorly drained soil.

L. coriaceum 2 x 2m Grey- green elliptical, small leaves – white flowers in spring. A good, hardy screen or windbreak plant for semi-arid climates. Full sun - most soils are suitable.

L. citratum (Lemon Scented Tea Tree)  3 X 2m Light green, soft lemon scented leaves white flowers in summer, tolerates dry periods but not water logging. Also known as L. petersonii

L. deuense 1.5 x  1.5m Elliptical green leaves to 3cm long – white flowers in summer. Suited to most situations – frost hardy.

L. epacridoideum 2 x 2m Small round leaves - white flowers in summer- tolerates shade, frost and is resistant to salt spray.

L. juniperinum 2 x 1m White flowers spring, very hardy suited to poorly drained soils – tolerates frost. 

L. laevigatum (Coastal Tea Tree) 4 x 3m White flowers spring and summer, heavily ridged papery bark, grey green leaves, very hardy, resistant to frost drought and salt, good for wind breaks

L. lanigerum (Woolly Tea Tree) 3 x 1m Young growth hairy, sometimes pinkish; white flowers in summer, hardy, prefers semi shade and damp soil.

L. liversidgei 2 x 1m Bright green, narrow lemon scented leaves. Small white flowers, occasionally pink in summer.

L. leuhmanii 5 x 5m Shiny dark green elliptical leavers to 5mm – white flowers summer. Well drained soil and full sun semi-tropics –tropics. 

L. longifolium 3 x 3m Attractive bright green weeping habit and long, narrow leaves. Grows along river banks. 

L. macrocarpum (syn. L. lanigerum var. macrocarpum) 1.5 x1.5m Leaves are oblong to 2 cm. Large 3cm flowers are white, pink or red, with prominent green centres - in summer and autumn. 

L. madidum subsp sativum 3 x 3m Narrow grey-green leaves to about 5 cm long – tiny white flowers. Good feature plant or hedge. Tolerant of most soils. Semi-tropical – tropical areas. 

L. minutifolium    2 x 2m Tiny attractive leaves. White flowers 1. 2 cm in diameter in spring and early summer, suited to semi-shade. Frost hardy.

L. muticaule 1 x 2m Leaves are elliptical to 1 cm. Small white flowers, needs good drainage, otherwise hardy

L. myrsinoides  2 x 1m Small dark green leaves to 1 cm. White to pink flowers spring to early summer. Frost hardy.

L. nitidum "Copper Sheen" 1.5 x 2m Bronze leaves, spreading bush, green  yellow flowers in spring, hardy.

L. obvatum 3 x 1.5m Small dark green leaves to 1.2 cm. White flowers white, in summer. Frost hardy, good screening plant, suited to heavy shade.

L. oligandrum 1 x 2m Small grey green obovate leaves, white flowers in spring. Hardy. 

L. parvifolium 1.5 x 1.5 Obovate 5 mm leaves. White or pale pink flowers in late winter and early spring. Very hardy

L. petersonii 4 x 3m Narrow, dark green, lemon scented, lance shaped leaves to 4 cm. White flowers in spring and early summer. Fast growing plant suited for screening, slightly frost tender. Suited to tropics. 

L. polygalifolium (syn. L. flavescens) 1-4 x 1-4m Oblong leaves (5-20mm) light green, oblong leaves. Flowers are white and profuse in late spring and summer. Frost hardy feature plant suited to tropics.

L. purpurascens 4 x 3m Leaves are light green broad and lance shaped to 2 cm long. Tiny white flowers in winter. Frost tender and moisture loving – suited to tropics. 

L. rotundifolium (syn. L. scoparium var. rotundifolium 2 x 3m Leaves shiny and. White to deep pink flowers in spring and early summer. Resistant to salt spray, frost hardy suited as hedge

L. scoparium (Manuka) 1 3 x 2m Variable in size, shape and flower colour, many forms and hybrids are widely cultivated for their spectacular flowers  pinks, whites, reds, doubles and singles. This species is relatively hardy, but normally short lived (5 7yrs) and /susceptible to scale and sooty mould.

L. sericeum 1.3 x 3m Bush with drooping branches, silky smooth leaves, pink flowers in spring hardy, slightly frost tender.

L. speciosum 2 x 3m Broad-lance shaped 2.5cm leaves. Small white flowers Useful screening plant tolerant of damp soil conditions.

L. specatabile 2-3 x 2m Narrow leaves to 3.5 cm long. Red 2cm flowers in late spring. Well drained soil full sun, frost hardy

L. spinescens 1 x 1 m Bright green leaves, white spring flowers, prickly foliage and corky bark. Good drainage required – frost hardy. 

L. squarrosum 2.5 x 1.5m Lance shaped l eaves, to 1.5 cm. Pale to deep pink flowers produced on old wood in autumn and winter. Frost hardy – resistant to salt spray. 

L. trinervium 4 x 3m Light green oblong Leaves to 2cm. White flowers in spring and throughout the year. Bird attracting. Frost hardy.

L. turbinatum 2 x 2.5 Leaves 2cm long, glossy, dark green. Large 2.5cm white flowers in late spring. Frost hardy, grows in heavy shade. 

L. variabile Dark green narrow leaves 2 cm long. White round petalled flowers in late spring. Tolerant of most soils and aspects, frost hardy.

Plant Health

Some species are susceptible to scale, sooty mould, web weaving caterpillars, and stem borers.
