Deciduous tree usually only reaching 15m high by 4m wide in cultivation. Pinnate leaves with 9-15 leaflets are rich yellow in autumn. Small, white, terminal flowers in spring. Fruit are berry-like pomes in autumn, varying in colour from yellow to red, depending upon the variety.

Uses

Ornamental tree suitable for parks and larger gardens.

Culture

Adaptable to most conditions and soils, it prefers a cool climate and fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Autumn foliage is more spectaular in cold areas. Tolerates frost, but is drought sensitive. Vulnerable to fireblight. Propagate by scarified seed in autumn, softwood cuttings or budding in summer, or grafting in winter.
