Black Locust

Deciduous tree 25m high by 5m wide. Mature bark is deeply furrowed and grey-brown. Bark and branches have spines. Pinnate leaves have 7-20 leaflets and turn yellow in autumn. Flowers are white, pea-like and in short racemes. Fruit are red-brown pods.

Uses

Ornamental tree suited to parks and larger gardens where its roots will not cause disturbance.

Culture

Adaptable to most soils and conditions. Tolerant to frost, drought, waterlogged soils, strong winds and air pollution. The roots are invasive and sucker readily. Avoid handling spines. Propagate by scarified seed in spring or suckers.
