Long lived, spreading deciduous tree approx 30m high by 15m wide. Glossy green leaves are obovate and deeply lobed, turning yellow-tan in autumn. Flowers are green pendant catkins. Fruit are cone-shaped brown nuts (acorns).

Uses

Ornamental tree suitable for parks and larger gardens, providing excellent shade. Important timber tree.

Culture

It prefers full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Frost tolerant. Susceptible to oak root fungus and leaf miner in humid areas. Propagate by seed.
