European Beech

Deciduous, upright tree reaching appox 20m high by 5m wide. Leaves are light green and oval shaped. Bark is smooth and grey. Male flowers are yellow catkins. Female flowers are green, occuring in pairs. Fruit are paired nuts. Many different cultivars have been bred for their habit and colouful foliage.

Uses

Specimen tree for parks and larger gardens. Some varieties can be trained as a hedge. The fruit is edible.

Culture

Prefers full sun in well-drained, alkaline soils. Frost tolerant and drought sensitive. Propagate by seed or suckers.
