Buxus sempervirens

Box, English Box, European Box

Small evergreen tree or shrub growing to 8m high by 4m wide. It has dark green, ovate, leathery leaves and pale yellow flowers that occur in terminal bunches. Many variegated cultivars are available.

Box is the classic hedge and topiary plant. The yellow timber of this species is also valuable for wood engraving.

Frost tolerant and drought resistant. It can be pruned for hedging or topiary, but avoid cutting into old wood. It can be propagated from seed or cuttings.
