This deciduous species is native to Iran. It grows to a height of 7 metres with a spread of 2.5 metres. It has smooth, heart shaped to ovate leaves and fragrant mauve flowers that occur in panicles.

Uses

Lilac is a useful tree for providing garden colour in a cool climate.

Culture

Lilacs are cool climate plants, and will only flower if they go cold dormant in the Winter. Syringa vulgaris prefers rich, moist alkaline soil with plenty of organic matter. It is frost resistant, but drought tender. It can be propagated by seed, although cuttings are preferable.
