Ligustrum ovalifolium

Oleaceae

California Privet

Evergreen or semi-deciduous tree, depending upon climate, growing to 3-4m high by 2-3m wide. Leaves are glossy, green and oval. Flowers are white panicles in summer. Fruits are round and black. 'Aureum' with its yellow variegated leaves is very widely grown variety.

Uses

Excellent hedging plant. Keep clipped to remove allergenic flowers and prevent seed set. 'Aureum' should be grown in full sun and green leaf shoots regularly removed.

Culture

Suitable for full sun or semi-shade in cool and temperate climates, it is adaptable to a range of soils. With high drought tolerance and a vigorous root system, it is now a weed in some countries. Suitable for hedging. Propagate by seed or by cuttings. Vulnerable to sap sucking insects such as scale and aphids.
