Slow growing, evergreen small shrub or tree, eventually growing to 6m high by 4m wide and forming a pyramid shape if not pruned. The leaves are bright green, ovate and thick. The flowers are insignificant. Several variegated varieties are available.

Uses

Ornamental tree grown for its attractive foliage, it is suitable for hedges and in coastal areas.

Culture

Suitable for sun or semi-shade in a temperate climate, it prefers well-drained soil. Tolerates drought and coastal conditions, and is frost resistant. Can be pruned to form a hedge. Propagate by cuttings in summer or seed.
