Zephyranthes (syn. Cooperia)

Amaryllidaceae

Rain Lily, Zephyr Lily, Fairy Lily, Magic lily, Rain Flower, Wind Flower

Most have narrow, linear, grass-like dark green leaves, though leaves are broader in some species and may be glaucous or red-tinged. They bear star-shaped flowers with six petals which usually face upwards, but are nodding in a few species. Flower colours vary from whites to yellows and pinks. They are sometimes fragrant. Flowers generally last only a couple of days but blooms may be continuously opening. The flowers often open after rain.

Uses

Greenhouse plant or indoor plant in cooler climates, border plant, bedding plant, or cut flowers.

Culture

These plants are often sold already potted up in order that their growth cycle is not disturbed. If acquired as bulbs, grow them in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. They may take a couple of years to become settled and produce flowers.

Propagation

The bulbs may be lifted and offsets divided when dormant. They can also be grown from ripe seeds planted straight away, but unless in ideal conditions will usually take several years to flower. The seeds from some hybrids are sterile.
